The Environment Agency protects homes and habitats, defending and renewing the environment for people and wildlife. With over 13,000 people across England, the Environment Agency work on rivers and coasts, at flood defences, waste sites, nuclear facilities, and in offices, labs and data centres. The Environment Agency offers graduate training schemes in Environment & Science and Engineering disciplines. With opportunities across England, both schemes provide structured training, mentorship, and support towards achieving professional chartership. The Environment & Science programme includes roles in biodiversity, water resources, flood modelling, and more, with opportunities for job shadowing, project work, and professional membership. The Engineering scheme prepares graduates for Chartered Engineer status with experience in sustainability, innovation, design, construction, and project management. Participants benefit from expert guidance, tailored placements, and both national and international development opportunities. The 12-week summer internships and 12-month industry placements are paid opportunities in various environmental disciplines. They provide valuable insight into areas of work that help the Environment Agency create places of resilience and renewal, where nature returns and futures can take root. The career entry programmes offer a unique gateway into the environmental sector, and serve as a stepping stone to explore different roles or specialise in niche technical areas. There is continued support to learn and develop and shape meaningful careers as the technical and people leaders needed for the future.
