The two-year training contract combines real responsibility on global matters with supervision from world-class lawyers who foster professional development. Trainees rotate through four practice areas, gaining experience in commercial law, including both corporate and finance. In their second year, trainees can apply for secondments, with both client and international options on offer. Latham & Watkins runs two vacation schemes over the academic year for applicants to get to know the firm and life as a trainee lawyer. Throughout the scheme, participants gain insight into two practice areas, participating in client calls, court visits, Q&As and training sessions, group work and social events. These schemes equip participants with a sense of the kind of lawyer they want to become, and afterwards participants can interview for a training contract. Latham & Watkins invest in growing their people and preparing them for the next stage of their careers. All trainees are supported through the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), which involves a one-year preparatory course that the firm sponsors. Trainees are provided with a £20,000 maintenance grant to cover the SQE. Non-law students are sponsored to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL), and given a further £20,000 to cover the PGDL if required. Upon joining, trainees benefit from a two-week induction to bridge the gap between law school and practice, and department specific training with every new seat. The training and career enhancement combines personal mentoring, career coaching, and hands-on learning with rigorous education.
