The Crown Prosecution Service delivers justice through the independent and effective prosecution of crime. With around 8,000 employees across England and Wales, almost half are lawyers. The rest help prosecutors prepare cases for court, or in other professions including finance, HR, comms and digital. The Crown Prosecution Service is the largest provider of criminal law pupillages in England and Wales. Their legal trainee scheme offers contracts every year to become a qualified solicitor or barrister. The organisation also recruits to other entry roles throughout the year with no qualifications needed – these include paralegal assistant, casework assistant, administrative officer, fees clerk, advocacy clerking assistant and victim liaison assistant. Work experience opportunities may be available on a regional basis. The Crown Prosecution Service’s legal trainee scheme is an extensive training programme to become a fully qualified solicitor or barrister. Legal trainees gain valuable experience in all areas of legal work, from reviewing cases and preparing pre-charge advice to attending meetings with victims and witnesses. They are supported by a supervisor who offers guidance and opportunities to develop their understanding of working as a prosecutor. Legal trainees are guaranteed a permanent position as a Crown Prosecutor or Crown Advocate after successful completion. The Crown Prosecution Service is committed to providing benefits that ensure employees’ needs are central, so they can thrive at work and home. People working in other professions are encouraged and supported to pursue professional qualifications within their areas. The Crown Prosecution Service also offers leadership and management development, mentoring, and a talent hub.
