The UK’s Intelligence Services work together to protect the country’s people, businesses and interests. MI5 focuses on security at home, collecting intelligence to mitigate risks. MI6 works worldwide to tackle overseas threats. And GCHQ uses analysis and cyber skills to keep the country safe in the real world and online. Protecting national security takes a lot of different skills. As a result, there are opportunities for graduates in four unique areas: intelligence, STEM, languages and corporate services. Graduates can train to become an Intelligence Officer at MI5 or MI6. Or if they’re interested in analysis, they could become an Intelligence Data Analyst with MI5 or GCHQ. Those passionate about science, technology, engineering or maths, might consider the Technology Graduate Development Programme with MI5 or MI6. Whilst students studying maths can join GCHQ as a maths and cryptography specialist. For linguists, there are exciting opportunities across all three agencies. The most common languages recruited for are Mandarin, Russian, Arabic and Persian. Additionally, there are roles in the corporate service teams, which provide mission-critical support. These include Admin Officers, Business Support Officers, Project Support Officers, and more. University students can also apply for internships in intelligence, maths and languages, which take place in the summer and autumn across the different agencies. Careers at the UK’s Intelligence Services are unlike anywhere else. Their strong emphasis on continuous learning and development means that successful applicants will have access to mentoring, tailored development plans, opportunities to gain professional qualifications, and more. And when it comes to the future, there’s plenty of flexibility. While successful applicants may start their careers with one agency, curiosity and a willingness to learn or specialise could lead to exciting opportunities at MI5, MI6 or GCHQ.
